A sclerosis multiplex krónikus, a központi idegrendszer gyulladásos autoimmun betegsége. Az agy és a gerincvelő idegsejtjeit körülvevő védőburok, a myelinhüvely károsodása következtében az idegrost lassabban vezeti vagy teljesen blokkolja az ingerületet. A betegség egyelőre nem gyógyítható, de kezeléssel a lefolyása késleltethető. Magyarországon 7-8000-re tehető az SM betegek száma.
